If you want a little more real estate to put out a spread, you may want to forgo the bistro table and get something a little larger. This really depends on the space you have available in your kitchen, as round kitchen tables come in all sizes. One of the benefits of going with a round table is that it appears a little more open, leaving your kitchen feeling less cramped. However, to get the same approximate square footage of table space on top, you may have to go with a slightly larger diameter than you ordinarily would.
The Many Uses of Kitchen Tables: Preparing food in the countertop or sink just could be ideal for quick preparations or microwave meals. But then there are seasons like Thanksgiving or Christmas, wherein several dishes need to be prepared at once. A countertop would not be able to hold a turkey for carving. Nor would it be comfortable to toss salad in cramped spaces. A kitchen table can provide ample space, as well as a good transition spot to be able to bring food out easier into the dining room.
The kitchen table will also be an ideal space for matters not related to food. It can be a place to sort laundry, or to go through the mail. It will be the ideal "studio" to let kids do their arts and crafts, because it is very near the washing area or sink (and it will also prevent the dining table from unsightly stains, and consequently keep it beautiful for visitors or hosting occasions). Wood tables can be maintained and kept beautiful with a cleaning solution of some oil and citrus (like orange or lemon oil). These will remove stains and smells and maintain the sheen of the surface if used regularly. Cracks or grooved surfaces on the table can be cleaned with an old tooth brush or cotton swab.
You can still keep the area looking open, however, by investing in round kitchen tables that have a pedestal design, have a glass top or smaller, more delicate legs. Heavy woods and legs can really suck up the visual space, and you want to take this into account when selecting furniture for the kitchen, or any room for that matter. The same is true with chairs. Instead of going with a solid back, you can go with one that is more open, even choosing wire bistro styles that are not only stylish, but which keep the dining area looking fresh and open. If you have a flair for interior design, you can also mix and match the chairs, to create an eclectic look that is inviting and energetic.
